Yelling at Dead People
A work-in-progress by Erica Richmond
This is the book I didn’t know I needed to write—until I had no choice but to write it.
Yelling at Dead People is a creative non-fiction work that explores the long, messy aftermath of suicide. Told through a series of essays and other creative writing forms, it’s a reflection on grief, parenting, and the complicated love that doesn’t end even when someone is gone.
It’s about trying to help my children grieve their father, while grieving the loss of a man I once deeply loved and had a complicated existence with. It’s about the conversations we still have with the people who are no longer here. The ones that keep us up at night. The ones that never got to happen.
I’m writing this slowly, honestly, and with care. It’s raw. It’s real. And I hope it offers connection and comfort to anyone who’s ever carried a grief that doesn’t fit neatly into words.
